Investigating ideas of the past, shedding light on present thinking. This is the goal of “Piccola Biblioteca Umanistica”, the series by Biblioteca di via Senato, a Milan-based institution that has been active for more than twenty years on the Italian cultural scene. The Biblioteca di via Senato has shown a consistent interest in ancient books, both as “aesthetic artifacts” and as dense “content receptacles”. With these collections of essays or monographs the Biblioteca intends to address and narrate, without any bias, the battle of ideas that has accompanied Western civilization over the centuries, in a relentless confrontation between utopian tension and sinister despotism, absolute freedom and grim violence, where no one is truly innocent.
