In 1520, the upper Tiber valley was the stage of two important events: the establishment of the diocese of Sansepolcro, and the expansion of Florence across the Apennines. This volume – resulting from the proceedings of an international conference – celebrates these events and delves into the political, economic and cultural developments of a particularly lively territory that was anything but peripheral. It was the chessboard where Florence, the Papal States, and the Signorie across the Apennines encountered and clashed, as well as the backdrop for the work of illustrious figures like Piero della Francesca, Luca Pacioli, Luca Signorelli and Raphael.
