The study of ancient perfumes and, in a more general sense, of aromatic plants and spices, remains marginal in the investigation of the ancient world and, in some cases, is considered only a mere divertissement. On the contrary, it allows us to open a glimpse on ancient societies, on people's habits, on their daily life. An everyday life marked not only by the 'news from the front' and by the worries about the outcome and the effects of the many, continuous conflicts, but also made of habits and routines, such as the visit to the agora market and its stores, the discussions not only 'high' but also 'normal' and 'frivolous', the purchase of perfumed ointments with which men and women used to sprinkle themselves.
