From the mid-sixteenth century, the houses of catechumens were the places designated for the instruction of those who wished to embrace the Catholic faith. Through the history of more than three centuries of these institutions under the House of Este, the volume aims to reconstruct how they were managed, the results they actually obtained, and the reasons why some Jews, often motivated by poverty, converted to the new faith.
