Clelia Grillo Borromeo Arese, a very controversial aristocrat and intellectual, hosted a literary salon that became an important landmark for cultural, artistic and scientific debate in early 18th-century Milan. In 1718 she established a relationship with Antonio Vallisneri. Her stays at Vallisneri’s Borromean palaces promoted a renewal of medical and natural sciences in the area of Milan and a significant expansion in the network of correspondents and assistants of the Paduan professor.
