The representation of women from Boccaccio and Castiglione to Capra and Marino is analysed from both a historical and celebratory perspective. Also investigated are the complex relationships between state mechanisms and the role of female rulers as sovereigns and regents. The political dimension and the representation of power as ceremonial and symbolic language draw attention to the complex, intertwining relationships between the European courts and their strategy of dynastic marriages.
