The aim of this essay is to investigate the function of animals in the works of sixteenth-century Florence sculptors. In this context the focus is on the precocious talent and powerful intuition of Niccolò Tribolo. His modern interpretation of nature found its full expression in the field of garden design and layout, and led to the recognition of animal sculpture as an independent genre.
