Between the formulation of the economical-juridical school and its opposers the author proposes a new and different approach. Analysis of the social structure of an area of the Sienese district at the beginning of the 14th century highlights the strong social disproportion existing: this induces abandoning the opposition category city-district from the moment that the latter cannot be considered homogeneous and univocal. Attention is therefore moved towards places and moments in which the social disproportion within the district’s community is shown under a dialectical and conflictual form, institutional organization, common assets and the fiscal system.
