It is thanks to Aldo Manuzio that Machiavelli could read Dante and Petrarch during his exile. The production of the “hand books” (libretti da mano), until then limited to devotional texts, was inaugurated in 1501 with Virgil. Casa Editrice Olschki has decided to publish the facsimile of the 1502 edition of the Divine Comedy (titled Le terze rime di Dante), based on the specimen conserved at the Classense Library, which in 1905 purchased it from Leo S. Olschki, together with the rest of Leo's collection. At the time, it was certainly the most comprehensive collection of Dante's work.
