While history promises to consolidate human time in evolutionary and organic forms, French Romanticism regards the present as a source of discontinuity that hinders the movement of time and rationality. The 'braking' power of the present seems to challenge the assumptions and consequences of a generational trust in progress. In this volume, different analyses outline the contradictions, uncertainties and reversals of perspective that characterize humanitarian liberalism and the concepts of freedom, progress, reason and action.

Massimo Blanco
Massimo Blanco insegna Letteratura francese presso la Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia dell’Università di Roma “La Sapienza”. I suoi interessi di ricerca vertono sulla poesia francese del XIX secolo (Mallarmé, Baudelaire, la poesia parnassiana) e del XX secolo (Paul Valéry, le avanguardie). Ha pubblicato numerosi saggi in rivista e ha curato un’edizione delle Poesie di Mallarmé (2014). Tra le sue monografie si ricordano: Cerchi d’acqua. Materiali per Paul Valéry (2003), Vedere il pensiero. Breton, Artaud, Tzara (2010), Corpi nell’intervallo. Da Mallarmé a du Bouchet (2012), Edipo non deve nascere.
