Alfonso Maria de' Liguori (1696 - 1787) is the author of the verses of Italy’s famous traditional Christmas carol Tu scendi dalle stelle, but he is also one of the most profound writers of the Incarnation, as noted by Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça in his enlightened Introduction. The Discorsi sulla Novena del Santo Natale (Discourses on the Novena of the Holy Christmas), accompanied by detailed source references compiled by Giacomo Jori and Laura Quadri, pay tribute to an enthusiastic writer defined by Giovanni Getto and, more recently, by Jean Delumeau as “a giant not only of the history of spirituality, but of history as a whole."
