Towards the end of 1827 the Milan-based publisher Lorenzo Sonzogno prints an elegant 'almanac' – La Botanica de' Fiori dedicata al Bel Sesso – containing flower tables etched by the artist Giuseppe dell’Acqua from Vicenza. The anonymous author was the man of letters Giuseppe Compagnoni, who popularized scientific issues for a female readership.
The first in a successful series of publications targeting the “gentle sex”, this small volume deals with aspects of nature ranging from elements of botanical science, to gardens and the romantic language of flowers.
