The book reconstructs the critical debate of the 17th century regarding relief altarpieces, with reference above all to the rivalry between Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Alessandro Algardi. Gian Lorenzo trained at a time in which discussions about reliefs, stimulated by the work of his father, Pietro, were very topical. The success of Algardi’s Attila and Pope Leo then radicalized Gian Lorenzo’s stance and some of his key works were created to oppose Algardi’s ideas.
