The inventory of the legacy of Avraham ben David Portaleone (1542-1612), a Jewish physician from Mantua, contains the catalogue of his library with more than 1100 titles of Hebrew, Latin, Italian and Greek books, including a few treatises by religious authors quite unexpected for the library of a Jewish intellectual of the XVIth century. The list helps to better understand the relationship between Hebrew tradition and the humanistic culture of Counter-Reformation.

Gianfranco Miletto
Gianfranco Miletto, nato a Torino nel 1960, ha studiato Lettere Classiche all´Università di Torino, dove ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca in Ebraistica nel 1991. Dal 2003 è libero docente alla Martin-Luther-Universität di Halle-Wittenberg. Tra i suoi campi di ricerca si contano sia lavori di filologia biblica (L’ Antico Testamento Ebraico nella tradizione babilonese: i frammenti della Genizah, Silvio Zamorani Editore, Torino 1992) che sulla cultura ebraica italiana tra il 16 e il 17 secolo (Die Heldenschilde des Abraham ben David Portaleone, Peter Lang Verlag, Frankfurt a.M. 2003; Glauben und Wissen im Zeitalter der Reformation: Der salomonische Tempel bei Abraham ben David Portaleone (1542-1612), Studia Judaica.
