Since the foundation in 1819 of the Florentine Gabinetto Scientifico Letterario, Giovan Pietro Vieusseux engaged himself in an intense work of cultural mediation between Italy and Europe, supporting with his activity the shaping of a modern Italian conscience during the first half of the XIXth century. The needs and potential opportunities of Italy are a key to the comprehension of the problematic European context in those years of great change.
