As Umberto di Romans taught, the sermon should rise like a chant («quasi quidam cantus») and enchant the listener like a minstrel or a merchant would do. Between the 13th and 15th centuries the itinerant preachers emerged as a unique cultural phenomenon, combining the announcement of the gospel, passion for story-telling, folk drama, ethical models, folklore and devotion. This volume presents the results of Carlo Delcorno’s extensive studies on preaching during the communal and humanistic period.
