The work of this doctor from Forlì (1530-1606) reassesses the human body and the importance of physical exercise – as practised by the Greeks and Romans – to improve fitness, preserve health and cure diseases. At the dawn of the Modern Age and with our present knowledge it seems that Mercuriale already understood the dangers of a misconceived competitive spirit. This critical edition, with a parallel English translation, intends to propose his message again on the occasion of the 2008 Olympic Games.
