This volume deals with the relationship between 17th- and 18th-century French literature on oriental themes and the development of the modern notion of tolerance by analyzing considerations found in works of travellers, missionaries, journalists and philosophers. Themes of particular importance: the analysis of the connection between the idea of tolerance and 17th- and 18th-century representations of the Islamic world, the meditation on religious diversity in the works of the Marquis d’Argens, the political problem of religious tolerance in Montesquieu’s works.
