The theory is that Manzoni intends to transform the opposing dualisms from which he starts (feeling/thinking, passion/reason, judgement/complicity, being/having to be, author/reader, etc.) into a higher level unity, reached exactly through the dialectical cooperation between the initially antithetically juxtaposed terms: therefore the dichotomy between feeling and thinking turns into an inseparable process, «felt reflection». Thus Manzoni transforms typically static antithetical structures into an anxious system characterized by mobility.
