In the late 18th century, Pierre Thouvenel’s dowsing theories caused much controversy among Italian scientists, who believed that the faculty of identifying subterranean waters and metals was not an occult science but a natural fact, comparable to the contractions of muscle fiber when stimulated by an electric current. The polemic, so far neglected by historians of science, raged at the same time as the debate over metallic and animal electricity, and typifies science in the Age of Enlightenment.

Lucia De Frenza è nata nel 1967. Si è laureata in Filosofia presso l’Università degli Studi di Bari e lì ha conseguito il Dottorato di Ricerca in Storia della Scienza. E’ autrice di alcuni saggi che affrontano l’analisi di temi e personaggi della scienza elettrica tra Settecento e Ottocento.
