The most recent documentary evidence and revisions of the biography of Geronimo Vespa da Napoli allow us to understand more clearly the dual nature of his «Primo libro de madrigali a cinque voci» (1570): composed as an «offering of virtue» for the occasion of the wedding of Lucrezia d’Este della Rovere, Princess of Urbino, the collection was intended to earn professional advancement for its composer far from the milieu of Naples, while in reality it is full of references to Neapolitan madrigals of the mid-sixteenth century.
