Studies on 16th century adaptions of Sophocles' «Antigone» in France - three in vulgar tongue (Calvy de la Fontaine, Baïf and Garnier) three in Latin (Hervet, Rataller and Lalemant) - tackle the problem of the effect the French Renaissance has on the Classics. Working the umpteenth Christian reductio on one side, on the other subduing the antique text to historical and political influences and finally transforming it according to the standards laid down by new literary genre such as tragic love novels or Petrarchan sonnets.

Michele Mastroianni è Professore ordinario di Letteratura francese, presso il Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’Università del Piemonte Orientale, di cui è direttore. E’ condirettore della «Rivista scientifica internazionale» di fascia A, «Studi Francesi» e direttore di varie collane. Si occupa della ricezione nella Francia del Rinascimento del teatro classico antico greco-latino e di poesia religiosa fra Cinque e Seicento.
