The theme of countenances and their role in conveying affection is considered from various points of view: in philosophical spheres, with the inevitable allusion to Neoplatonism and Ficino; in artistic literature where a physiognomic concept of portraits is created; in court festivities or religious celebrations where the spectacular style of communication has a greater impact than the expressive traits of the actors, dancers and musicians themselves.
