The role and function of music in the gentleman’s ethic and intellectual formation is investigated using a rich collection of non musical sources (treatises on behaviour, novels, epic and lyric poetry) which in large part have escaped the attention of music historians. The aim is to claim for the musical discipline, in its dual dimensions of theory and practice, a specific role in constructing the nobleman’s identity throughout the 16th and 17th centuries.
