Hercules, expression of strength and wisdom, was adopted by the Medici family, since the 16th century, also as a symbol of warrior valour; paintings and poetry placed his image alongside that of the greatest soldiers of the dynasty. This volume is dedicated to that period in which the grand dukes of Tuscany, directly involved in major disputes both in Italy and Europe, attempted a more concrete legitimacy even through instruments of a military appearance.
