This study deals with the techniques of diplomacy employed by Lorenzo de’ Medici during the tragic events of 1488 in Romagna. By successfully handling a crisis that had questioned the existence of a Florentine influence in the region, Lorenzo was able to consolidate the territorial dominion of the Republic beyond the Apennines simultaneously affirming the principles of his particular ‘balance of power’ in relationships between Italian states of that period.
