The history of Sicilian ports has been considered during the long period between the 15th century and the unity of Italy (two centuries of Spanish dominion, a brief period of Sabaudian and Austrian dominion and the Borbon period in its various developements). The harbour system of Sicily has been assessed as a whole be it the principal ports or simple landing stages, in its economic and structural aspects and relating to the type of intervention. In the period examined the original harbour system comprising three main ports and a series of simple shippers or landing stages destitute of any specific equipment passed over to being a system characterized by two main ports Palermo and Messina and a series of secondary ports.
