The collection of the Piccolomini manuscripts unites 32 codices of the works of Papa Pio II, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, and part of the correspondence belonging to the Piccolomini family of Siena, dismembered and in part sold at the end of the 18th century. It describes the story of the collection, the story and the contents of each codex and identifies the hands of the copyists.
In the second part the 547 musical manuscripts, belonging to the period from the end of the 18th through to the beginning of the 20th centuries, are the ‘remains’ of larger collections neglected because considered lacking in interest with the change of musical tendencies.
