The journal was created in 1893 by the Società Storica della Valdelsa to collect studies on the social, literary, artistic, religious, and cultural history of Valdelsa, with a special focus on the Middle Ages. The journal showed in its beginnings the influence of the main trends in historiography of its time, such as that of the historical-philological school and of the economic-juridical one, as Croce would define it. Nonetheless, over the years the «Miscellanea» has succeeded in developing itself according to the new advancements in historiography, and has widened its interests toward the modern and contemporary ages, and the history of culture, historiography, and ideas.
