«Lares» is a journal of demographic, ethnographic and anthropological studies founded in 1912 by L. Loria (1912) and later directed by F. Novati (1913–15), P. Toschi (1930–32; 1949–74), E. Bodrero (1933–43), G.B. Bronzini (1974–2001), V. Di Natale (2002) and P. Clemente (2002–17). In 2018 Fabio Dei took over as director. The journal examines the anthropological study of contemporary popular cultures, sometimes with miscellaneous volumes on individual aspects. However, it generally deals with research topics, theoretical themes and critical debates on various aspects of social and cultural life, from the study of material and nonmaterial culture to that of cultural consumption, paying close attention to the methods and history of anthropology. Italian ethnography – to which Loria devoted the journal – is also at the base of «Lares», although in a different way.
