The cathedral of San Martino in Lucca is not only a remarkable example of architecture and art, but by virtue of its relevance in the life of the town, it has featured prominently in all the major events that characterised Lucca’s history since the Middles Ages. The cathedral has been a vital place of worship, a lively center of pilgrimages and exchanges, an expression of the centuries-long commitment of artists and architects, and a protagonist of the sociopolitical transformations of this area. In this study, a collection of essays by specialists from different disciplines elevate the monument to a European dimension and bring back to life its millennial history.
