Muratori’s 49 sets of letters include his correspondence with Leibniz, that covers their mutual interest in historical research on the origins of the Houses of Este and Hannover, which preceded Muratori’s 1717 treatise about Antichità Estensi and his subsequent historiographic works. Another important figure among his correspondents was the poet Francesco de Lemene from Lodi, who - together with Maggi and Muratori himself – was one of the proponents of the Arcadian renewal of poetic creation. Ecclesiastical figures also feature prominently: these include Antonio Leprotti and Giuseppe Livizzani in Rome, but originally from Modena, who were staunch defenders of Muratorian writings in the Curia; the Benedictine Celestino Lorefici, who followed in the footsteps of Bacchini; and Andrea Lucchesi Palli from Messina, who promoted Muratori’s ideas in Sicily.
