De consolatione

In De consolatione (1542 and 1544) Cardano offers a new interpretation of the classical “consolation” genre. The text - containing arguments that weave together philosophy, medicine, and humanities – sketches the outlines of an art that is essential to the individual to protect against adversity in civil life and the anguish of an uncertain existence. Firmly rooted in the Milan context but holding a clear European vision, Cardano bears witness to the tensions pervading a time still permeated by the Erasmian project.
