Studi di storia e cultura monastica in ricordo di Padre Pierdamiano Spotorno O.S.B.

The history of western monasticism has made the object of extensive investigation especially concerning the Middle Ages. This collection brings together thirty essays, organized into three sections, that provide a rigorous and historiographically accurate overview of the religion, artistic, and cultural aspects of monastic life. The analysis focuses mainly on the Vallumbrosan Order, but extends also to other branches of the Benedictine and Carthusian world, from the start of the second millennium to the end of the 19th century. The collection provides insights into a key aspect of European civilization, that even contributed to its very definition.

Francesco Salvestrini
Francesco Salvestrini insegna Storia Medievale all’Università di Firenze. Si occupa di storia del monachesimo benedettino, segnatamente vallombrosano, camaldolese e cistercense, con particolare attenzione alla storia delle istituzioni ecclesiastiche, ma ha dedicato lavori anche allo studio del rapporto fra insediamenti umani ed aree boschive e fluviali, alla storia della storiografia e dell’erudizione nella Toscana d’Ancien Régime, alla normativa delle città comunali italiane. Fra le sue monografie si segnala: Libera città su fiume regale. Firenze e l’Arno dall’Antichità al Quattrocento, Firenze, 2005; Disciplina caritatis.
