This study, in four illustrated volumes, examines and seeks to demythologize the reception (1883-2012) of the adventure novelist, Emilio Salgari. Under Fascism a group of zealots campaigned for his adoption as a ‘Prefascist’, hounding his publisher with anti-Semitic and mendacious abuse. This volume also reveals how fake Salgari novels contaminated the market. A counterbalance appears in the enthusiasm for the writer of young antifascist intellectuals like Gramsci and Pavese.
