Book production from its origins around the mid-fifteenth century to the twentieth century represents a wonderful and still little-known chapter in the history of technology. Bookmaking processes essentially remained the same for over 300 years until techniques shifted from manual to mechanical, driven by a market demanding large numbers of copies and low prices. This meant that books lost their elegant appearance as handcrafted products and were transformed into a serial object.
