The scenario of Italian antiquarian books, even in its highest expression, essentially lacks an organic history. The proceedings of the convention dedicated to Giuseppe Martini (1870–44) help fill this lacuna. Martini was a collector and merchant of ancient manuscripts and books in his birthplace of Lucca, as well as early twentieth-century New York and, lastly, Lugano, which welcomed Italians fleeing from Fascism. The outcome is a very vivid cross-section of the Italian and international book culture of the era.
