Through essays by a varied research group, the book analyses the political exile of Italians to the United States between the two world wars. More generally, it reflects on the way significant representatives of Italy’s liberal and democratic cultures considered and interpreted American democracy in the twentieth century. These include Luigi and Mario Einaudi, Max Ascoli, Ugo La Malfa, Manlio Rossi-Doria, Luigi Sturzo and Gaetano Salvemini.
