The author reconsiders the role of Lactantius and of his Divine Institutes in the history of Christianity. She studies the relationship of the rhetorician with Cicero in his defence of the Christian iustitia and religio, and his pretence of being an “effective” apologist in front of pagan readers who disdained the Bible. She also illustrates the argumentative strategy - made of history and myth, of common values and original concepts – with which he thought he would help the Romans, the Christians and the Jews to conceive the religious revolution that he thought that Rome would soon face.

Blandine Colot
Blandine Colot est maître de conférences habilitée de latin à l’Université d’Angers, membre du Ceriec (EA 922) et du LEM (UMR 8584).
Grammairienne de formation, ses premières recherches ont porté sur les recompositions sémantiques de notions religieuses et morales par les auteurs chrétiens. Elle a rédigé la notice « Pietas » dans le Vocabulaire européen des philosophies (dir. B. Cassin). Spécialiste de Lactance, elle a publié une vingtaine d’articles où elle a appréhendé l’apologiste dans son rapport au « modèle » Cicéron, aux chrétiens, de Tertullien à Augustin, à Eusèbe, et dans sa prétention à être en son temps « efficace ». Cet ouvrage entend dégager cet auteur de la relative marginalité où il reste cantonné. - (gennaio 2016) -
