This volume, divided in two parts, “ancients” and “moderns”, collects eighteen studies on the themes of passions, virtues, action, and freedom. Under the ethical point of view, the soul – traditionally considered between eternity and time – needs the body, as well as virtues need passions. Ancient and modern thinkers gave different answers to these questions, but the results of their debate were good. This is a point that the introduction underlines as one of the reasons of the importance of the Renaissance culture.
