A long tradition of studies has generally accepted that, after an initial explicit adhesion to Democritus’ physical atomism, Galileo’s concept of matter developed into the mathematical theory of the continuum illustrated in his Discorsi of 1638. The analysis carried out in this volume suggests that these two different interpretative models of the structure of matter were not considered by Galileo as alternative, but co-existed from the very beginning of his intellectual activity and were regarded by him as perfectly equivalent.
