Ludovico Cigoli’s Prospettiva Pratica (Practical Perspective) is both a work of artistic literature and a remarkable scientific document about the role attributed to the representation of the visible world within the scope of Galilean research. Composed by one of the painters closest to Galileo during the period of great astronomical discoveries (1610 -1613), the treatise illustrates several themes crucial to perspective drawing, from orthogonal projections to shadow projection, from theatrical scenes to the use of mechanical instruments.

Filippo Camerota (1960), architetto, è Vice Direttore Vicario e responsabile delle collezioni del Museo Galileo – Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza di Firenze. Ha insegnato Disegno e Storia dell’architettura presso l’Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia, dedicando la sua carriera di studioso alla storia delle ‘intersezioni’ tra arte e scienza, con particolare riguardo alla prospettiva rinascimentale. Tra le sue principali pubblicazioni sul tema della prospettiva si segnalano il catalogo della mostra (Uffizi, 16 ottobre 2001 - 7 aprile 2002) curata in occasione delle celebrazioni di Masaccio (Nel segno di Masaccio. L’invenzione della prospettiva, Giunti, Firenze, 2001), e il recente volume monografico La prospettiva del Rinascimento. Arte, architettura, scienza, Electa, Milano 2006.
Filippo Camerota (1960), architect, is Deputy Vice Director and Collection Manager of the Museo Galileo – Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza di Firenze. He taught architectural drawing and history of architecture at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura in Venice. His studies focus on the ‘intersections’ between art and science, with particular regard to Renaissance perspective. Among his principal published works on linear perspective, we point out an exhibition catalogue edited in the occasion of Masaccio’s celebrations (Nel segno di Masaccio. L’invenzione della prospettiva, Giunti, Firenze, 2001), and a recent book on the history of Renaissance perspective in art, architecture and science (La prospettiva del Rinascimento. Arte, architettura, scienza, Electa, Milano 2006).
