The personal and professional history of Nikolaj Petrovič Ottokar represents an extraordinary instance in the framework of Italian medieval studies. Although Russian born, he chose Italy as his adopted homeland and became one of the major scholars of the common medieval citizen. Author of various essays which in a certain sense have not been surpassed and have been the stimulation for vivacious historiography debates, he held the tenure of Medieval History as full professor at the University of Florence from 1930 until his death in 1957.
The volume, a result of passionate group work, intends to piece together and fill, at least partially, the void that covers the years before Nikolaj Petrovič, historian of the middle ages, definitively chose for Italy.
