During the 16th century Rome underwent a gradual process of physical and functional transformation affecting streets and squares, as well as the relationships between built-up and non-built-up areas. For each pontificate the book examines how such changes happened in the Leonine City and the rest of the town. Included are lists of changes, made during the various pontificates, that are significant from a town planning perspective.
