The reception of Ortensio Lando’s Paradossi at Inns of Court in the 1590s is the general subject of this study. Reproduced in the appendix the reader finds The Defence of Contraries, the first English translation of 12 paradossi. From Lando, to Charles Estienne’s French translation addressed to the law apprentices, to John Donne’s own Paradoxes written while a student at Lincoln’s Inn, the author traces the transformations of paradoxy in the Renaissance.
