This anonymous work, composed in Padua in the early fourteenth century, is undoubtedly the masterpiece of the French-Italian literary tradition: by renewing the characteristics of the chanson the geste and the legend of Roland with intelligence and humour, the anonymous author opens the season culminating with the chivalric epics of Boiardo and Ariosto. The reprint of the excellent unique edition by the eminent French philologist Antoine Thomas (1913) is most welcome for its intrinsic literary value and historical significance.
