The volume deals with one of the themes central to the European states in the second half of the 18th century, the relationship between merchant class, social order and economic development. The focus is on a family of bankers operating in the silk industry and on his most outstanding member, economist Ignazio Donaudi delle Mallere: the book traces phases and moments of a political and economic struggle that deeply marked the Sabaudian society, its possibilities of growth and civil progress.

Giorgio Monestarolo
Giorgio Monestarolo (Torino, 1970) si occupa di storia socio–culturale e in particolare studia gli aspetti della formazione delle società di mercato in età moderna. Laureato a Torino, ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca presso l’Università di Pisa. E’ stato borsista presso la Fondazione Luigi Firpo e la Fondazione Filippo Burzio di Torino. Docente di filosofia e psicologia nella scuola secondaria superiore è contrattista di ricerca presso l’Università di Torino. Fra le sue pubblicazioni Più mezzadri, meno fittavoli.
