This book explores the creation of a new science, molecular biology, in the intellectual, social and cultural contexts of the Atomic age. It follows the trajectories of several physicists who began to study life, invented new instruments and social practices. It shows how these events relate to the changing relationships between science and the State and between Europe and the United States and, more generally, to the transformation of science and society in post-war Europe.
