Each study in this volume explores and clarifies one or more aspects of the multifaceted nature of Chinese musical experience, focusing on its construction of meaning, both in the theoretical debate and in the realm of practice. Rather than attempting to construct some kind of meta-theory for the comprehension of Chinese music as a whole, it aims at reconstructing local itineraries of «sense» deriving from context and comparison, to show the extraordinary variety of responses given in China to the problem of musical meaningfulness.
