The Renaissance Vatican as we know it today has become the emblem of the papacy. Less well known is the fact that within it is hidden an older palace which, during the middle ages, was not the papal see. This, the Lateran, is studied in detail, and all the sources for reconstructing its architecture and history are examined and placed in the context of its later evolution.
